Brooklands

Experience. Heritage. Technology

Completed in 1907 at a staggering cost of £150,000, equivalent to millions of pounds today, the Brooklands Circuit at Weybridge was the world’s first purpose-built racing circuit. It hosted legendary motor racing events between 1907 and 1939, including the first British Grand Prix in 1926.
From chequered flag…
Brooklands can tell many stories of the motor sport pioneers and their early successes – not least those of Mercedes and Benz. In 1909, Victor Hemery broke five records in a Benz in one day, including two world records. This was followed in 1913 by two more world records set by L.G. Hornsted in a modified ‘Lightning’ Benz. A firm Brooklands favourite and highlight of the 1921 season was the arrival of Count Zborowski’s ‘Chitty Bang Bang’. With its Mercedes chassis and 6-cylinder Maybach aeroplane engine, it won the first race on Easter Monday and went on to give birth to a legend.
… to chequered history
After 1945, the Brooklands site was broken up by commercial developments, roads and buildings. Only part of the original circuit survived, and some of these original stretches of track have now been restored as part of the Mercedes-Benz World development – a fitting tribute to the birthplace of British motor racing.
