450 Mercedes-Benz Citaro

Major Order from Istanbul

Stuttgart/Istanbul
DaimlerChrysler Buses & Coaches and the Istanbul urban transit authority (Istanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel) signed a contract in Istanbul today for the delivery of 450 urban buses. This major order calls for the delivery of 350 Mercedes-Benz Citaro solo buses and 100 articulated buses from the Mannheim production plant in 2005.

“This major order from IETT testifies to the successful cooperation between Turkey and Germany within our European production and supply network,” said Wolfgang Diez, Senior Vice President of the DaimlerChrysler Buses & Coaches unit. “By opting for these state-of-the-art low-floor buses, IETT is setting a new benchmark for the region's public transportation network.”

The Citaro urban buses will be the first low-floor buses ever used in the Istanbul public transportation network – or anywhere else in Turkey. They will replace the previously used high-floor buses and thus set new standards of efficiency and comfort for urban transport networks in Turkey. The Mercedes-Benz Citaro is the most successful family of low-floor regular-service buses in Europe. The 10,000th Citaro rolled off the assembly line in fall 2004. In 2004 alone, more than 2,500 Mercedes-Benz Citaros were sold. Thanks to its cost-efficiency and environment-friendly features, the Citaro is setting new standards in its segment.

Passengers appreciate the comfortable low-floor technology and the bright, friendly design of the interior, which features a generous standing height and a powerful air-conditioning system. The Citaro also has an electronic braking system (EBS) with disc brakes on all the wheels as well as an anti-lock braking system (ABS). The operators of Citaro buses benefit from the model's powerful and efficient engine, low-maintenance needs, easily cleaned construction and high passenger capacity.

The Istanbul urban transit authority IETT operates a fleet of more than 2,500 buses that transport around 1.5 million passengers every day along 475 bus lines. Each bus is used by an average of 600 passengers a day. Since early 1997, IETT has purchased only buses made by Mercedes-Benz. Today, one out of every five vehicles operated by IETT sports the Mercedes star.
