38 Citaro buses for British Airways

Stuttgart – The airline British Airways has acquired 38 Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses. They will be used for transporting passengers in Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5, which is opening in March 2008. The new Mercedes‑Benz buses are equipped according to the specific wishes of British Airways.

They include automatic climate control and three passenger doors – one on the driver’s side and two on the opposite side – so that the passengers can quickly enter and exit. To make the passengers as comfortable as possible, the capacity in the new airport buses has been reduced from the original 100 down to 45 passengers within the same bus length (12 m).

A deciding factor for British Airways in selecting the Mercedes‑Benz buses was their modern, environmentally-friendly automotive engineering with BlueTec® Euro 5. This technology already fulfils the emission guideline that will not take effect in Europe until 2009. Compared with the current emission guideline, the Euro 5 standard stipulates that nitrogen oxide must be further reduced by 43%. The Mercedes‑Benz Citaro fulfils current and future emission levels with BlueTec® based on SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology. The Mercedes‑Benz Citaro bus family was first introduced to the market in 1998.

With 17,500 vehicles assembled since then, the Citaro is the most successful urban bus within this segment. The Citaro has been breaking every record: last year more than 3,000 units were produced. Its state-of-the-art technology ensures a promising future for the vehicle. Besides the Euro 4 and Euro 5 BlueTec® engines, a gas drive system and EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle) technology are also available.
