Higher transport capacity even despite lower maintenance costs
With the CapaCity, the Mercedes‑Benz Bus and Coach unit of EvoBus GmbH is staying fully abreast of the development trends in the European urban bus market: the CapaCity meets the requirements of the public local transport operators for concentrating their service on the main transport routes and reducing fuel, driver, workshop and capital costs and addresses the rising demands of passengers for attractive local public transport concepts. It already meets future emission limits and as of 2007 can be certified in accordance with the emission standard EEV.

Due to its length of 19.54 m, its fourth axle and the resulting increase in the perm. GVW to up to 32 tonnes, the CapaCity allows significantly higher passenger capacity in comparison with articulated buses. This capacity increases by up to 40% to a maximum of 193 people, assuming a permissible capacity utilisation of the number of standing passengers of eight people per square metre, depending on seating layout. The main requirement for this, besides the larger area, was a payload increase of more than three tonnes. The four double-wide doors, two of which are in the back section, completely stepless entry and exit and generous centre platforms for standing passengers, parents with prams and wheelchair occupants allow for a smooth flow of passengers into and out of the vehicle.

The additional capacity of the CapaCity provides a huge advantage in several aspects: increasing the transport capacity on highly loaded urban lines is in many ways no longer economical. With large-capacity buses, however, the same transport quality (passengers per hour) can be achieved using fewer buses. This noticeably decreases operating and staffing costs and is highly advantageous when it comes to reducing the environmental burden as much as possible. Conversion costs for bus stops and routes are almost completely unnecessary for the large-capacity urban bus CapaCity as its vehicle length is only slightly longer than normal and it has phenomenal manoeuvrability, allowing it to be easily used within the existing infrastructure.
