Future-oriented bus concept
The varieties of the Mercedes-Benz Citaro available are unsurpassed: the low-floor rigid bus with two or three axles, from 10.5 m to 15 m long; the low-floor articulated bus and low-floor inter-city bus; the low-entry Citaro LE and the Mercedes-Benz CapaCity, the large-capacity bus derived from Citaro, are a response to the issue of public transit in cities and surrounding areas. The Citaro has run successfully for a long time in most European metropolises. It’s at home in 39 countries in the world, including such places as Australia, Japan, China and Mexico.

The bus concept of the Mercedes-Benz Citaro is also equipped for the drive types of the future. That is why the Citaro provided the basis for the largest fuel cell practical trial run in the world. Between 2003 and 2006, 30 fuel cell buses based on the Citaro ran under a wide range of conditions in public transportation systems throughout all of Europe. In addition, the Australian city Perth and China’s capital city of Beijing each hosted three of the vehicles. In total all the vehicles together covered a distance of over two million kilometres and clocked 125,000 hours in operation.

The intermediate step on the way to the series production breakpoint for a vehicle propulsion system using fuel cells is called hybrid drive. Last year the first hybrid bus was introduced. At the beginning of the year, the Citaro G BlueTec® hybrid received the DEKRA environmental prize. The vehicle received the award for making a sustainable contribution to a higher quality of life for city dwellers. The hybrid bus is currently being tested and will be launched on the market in 2009.
