| | Largest order for the Swiss market in more than 20 years |
At the beginning of January 2008, Transports Publics Genevois (TPG) the Geneva transport operator, and Daimler subsidiary EvoBus GmbH signed a contract for the purchase of 113 urban buses. This continues a long-standing association which began in 1988 with the delivery of around 120 urban buses of the predecessor model O405.
This major order comprises 83 articulated, and 30 rigid Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses manufactured in Mannheim. All 113 vehicles are to be delivered in the first half of 2008 - among them will be the 1000th Mercedes-Benz Citaro sold to Switzerland; it is set to be handed over in the spring of 2008. This contract means that in future practically all the urban buses on the streets of Geneva will be Mercedes-Benz buses.
Apart from this, the agreement includes a Service and Maintenance contract: "ServiceSelect", under the terms of which the subsidiary EvoBus (Schweiz) AG will provide the Geneva public transport authority TPG with professional support for vehicle maintenance, as well as other services.
The 113 Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses are already today equipped with Euro-5-compliant, BlueTec-based diesel technology engines; this standard will only become mandatory as of the end of 2009. But not only that: the buses also fulfil the voluntary EEV exhaust emission standards (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles), in combination with a closed particulate filter system, in order to help force a further reduction in exhaust gas emissions.
"We are delighted that the second-largest Swiss transport operator, Transports Publics Genevois with its current vehicle fleet of around 220 buses, is once again placing an order of these dimensions with us and, beyond that, with the "OMNIplus ServiceSelect" service and maintenance contract, is engaging in a long-term association with us", said Holger Suffel, Vice President Sales, Service & Parts Daimler Buses. "This underscores our customer’s trust as well as the continuing success stories both of our Mercedes-Benz Citaro in the urban bus sector, and of our OMNIplus service packages."
The Mercedes-Benz Citaro is the most successful low-floor bus family in Europe. Since it began series production in 1998, the Citaro has already been sold around 20,000 times. The urban bus with the three-pointed star sets new standards in its segment with its economy and environmental friendliness. |
