Citaro CNG with the environmental ”Blauer Engel"

New natural gas buses of Regionalbus GmbH Mühlhausen bear the environmental “Blauer Engel” label.

- Transit operator takes delivery of six new Citaro natural gas buses
- “Blauer Engel” quality seal thanks to low-emission drive and environmentally compatible production
- Since 1995, over 5 million miles of experience with natural gas buses

Stuttgart/Mühlhausen – The Regionalbus-Gesellschaft Unstrut-Hainich und Kyffhäuserkreis mbh in Mühlhausen/Thuringia has now initially placed in service four new, natural gas-powered Mercedes-Benz Citaro city buses. Their EEV certified drive already complies with the Euro 5 emission limits planned for 2008/2009, and together with the low noise emission as well as the environmentally compatible production of the buses in the Daimler-Chrysler plant in Mannheim, was the basis for the award of the “Blauer Engel” eco symbol by RAL e.V.

The four new public service buses were handed over on 11 February 2003 by Winfried Heckt, Domestic Sales Manager for Mercedes-Benz Omnibusse, to Ewald Degenhardt, Managing Director of Regionalbus GmbH, in Mühlhausen. Two more vehicles will be delivered in March 2003.

The drive of these buses with the completely newly developed natural gas engine is certified according to EEV (Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicles). A bendy bus from the Mercedes-Benz Citaro bus family, with natural gas drive, has been in service in Mühlhausen since 2002 and already complies with the future emission limits of Euro 4.

Regionalbus GmbH operates road-based public transit in northern Thuringia, in Unstrut-Hainich and in the Kyffhäuser district. Transportation primarily consists of student and trainee traffic in the regional network as well as city travel in the market towns of Mühlhausen and Sondershausen. The fleet of vehicles of the transit operator consists of around 100 public service buses, including 24 natural gas operated vehicles.

The first Mercedes-Benz city buses with natural gas drive were placed in service in 1995. Consequently, the transit operator is one of the pioneers in using modern natural gas buses and can report on the experience gained with a mileage exceeding five million miles. On the use of especially low-emission buses with natural gas drive, the Managing Director Ewald Degenhardt states: “Thuringia is the green heart of Germany. We are surrounded by a national park; consequently we need to protect this natural countryside whilst simultaneously retaining mobility. That is why we rely on state-of-the-art technology for our buses.”
