| Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the world’s cleanest diesel model.
Making its world debut at this year’s Detroit Motor Show, the E 320 BLUETEC features the first of a new generation of extremely economical, low-emission engines. A combination of features reduce untreated emissions and virtually eliminate particulate emissions but don’t inhibit performance – the V6 in the E 320 BLUETEC delivers V8 power but with the economy of a four-cylinder engine.
BLUETEC technology has the ability to meet the world’s most stringent exhaust emissions standards and is to be launched into the USA market in the autumn. The E 320 BLUTEC engine is based on the highly successful 320 CDI common rail diesel engine already powering a number of Mercedes-Benz models. |
Mercedes-Benz has been marking a safety milestone, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the airbag, a life-saving technology it helped to pioneer.
It was back in late1980 that the Mercedes S-Class became the world’s first production model to feature an airbag, following a 13-year development programme. Since then Mercedes-Benz has fitted the safety device to more than 12 million vehicles and made airbags standard equipment across its entire model range back in 1992.
Accident research shows that the airbag has helped to save over 14,000 lives in the United States since the late ‘80s and some 2,500 in Germany since 1990. The airbag is now part of Mercedes safety history along with the crumple zone, collapsible steering column, seat-belt tensioner, anti-lock brakes, ESP® electronic stability program and the award-winning PRE-SAFE anticipatory accident protection system.
