The new third-generation M-Class arrives here in the UK in April next year and is equipped with sleek new styling, enhanced on and off road performance and class-leading economy. It’s once again ready to set new benchmarks in the sports utility sector.
Across the M-Class range, fuel consumption is improved by an average of 32.9% over the outgoing model and the fleet line-up is spearheaded by the new ultra-efficient ML 250 BlueTEC model, which replaces the current ML 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY.
Powered by a highly economical 204hp 2.1-litre twin-turbo diesel engine with BlueTEC technology and mated to the award-winning 7G-Tronic Plus 7-speed automatic transmission, the ML 250 BlueTEC returns a remarkable 44.8 mpg and just 165 g/km CO2 on the combined cycle. These figures improve on those of the ML 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY by a huge 12.3 mpg and an equally impressive 65 g/km, making it the ideal choice for active company car drivers.
Combined with this efficiency and cleanliness – the engine already meets EU6 emission regulations that only come into effect in 2014 – the ML 250 BlueTEC posts some excellent performance figures, accelerating to 62mph in nine seconds and recording a 130 mph top speed.
All new generation M-Class models feature a raft of BlueEFFICIENCY economy-enhancing technologies including ECO start/stop functionality, lightweight aluminium-intensive construction, electric steering, low rolling resistance tyres, and on-demand control for the climate control and oil and water pumps – all of which work to significantly improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions.
Meticulous attention to the car’s suspension, steering and braking systems has resulted in a car that fully rewards the enthusiastic driver with taut handling, prompt responses and generous feedback. For the more adventurous drivers, the optional On & Off Road package uses a range of six transmission modes to optimise driving dynamics and handling safety, all accessed and controlled by a rotary actuator on the centre console.
The sumptuously-appointed five-seater cabin benefits from greater head, shoulder, hip and leg room, while levels of standard safety, infotainment and convenience equipment are exceptionally high. The options list also includes Active Curve System for heightened dynamism, Adaptive Damping System for superb ride comfort in all conditions, and Night View Assist Plus with automatic person recognition.
With improved economy and emissions, the ML 250 BlueTEC will appeal to user-choosers looking for something more substantial and versatile than a saloon without the hefty tax bill normally associated with luxury SUVs.
