Keeping your car road legal

The road tax for your car must be paid and up to date. To apply for a tax disc, simply complete a V10 form, available at any Post Office or go on-line. But what else do you need to know? To help you keep your vehicle road legal, we’ve put together recommendations that can help you avoid unnecessary fines and, in some cases, bans or even prison sentences.

1. MOT

It’s up to you make sure your car is in good running condition. It must pass an MOT three years after the date of the first registration, and then every year after that. NEVER drive a car without an MOT certificate, or you could face heavy penalties.

2. Registration

If you bought your car new, your retailer should have arranged registration for you. Check that your details are correct on the Registration Document.

3. Tax

The road tax for your car must be paid and up to date. To apply for a tax disc, simply complete a V10 form, available at any Post Office or go on-line.  You must always keep your tax disc displayed in your car.

4. Insurance

It is illegal to drive without insurance. You must have at least minimum cover, third party liability. You can take out one of three different types of policies:

  • Comprehensive (the most thorough cover)
  • Third party, fire and theft
  • Third party only (the minimum cover)
