Mercedes-Benz was the first to introduce anti-lock braking (ABS) in 1970. By applying the brakes in a series of rapid ´stutters´, ABS prevents the wheels locking up in hard braking, maximises stopping distance, and crucially retains steering capability.
Research inspired another Mercedes-Benz innovation, Brake Assist (BAS). This showed that in emergency situations drivers often applied brakes quickly, but not hard enough. BAS detects this, and applies maximum braking when it´s really needed, considerably reducing stopping distances. Both ABS and BAS come as standard on the CL-Class Coupé.
Optional features include Distronic Plus with integrated BAS Plus, an anticipatory version of Brake Assist whereby the braking power you apply is maximised when the Distronic Plus sensors detect the threat of a collision. Also available is Pre-Safe® brake, a system which automatically initiates partial braking and triggers other Pre-Safe® measures in the event of a possible accident.
