Mercedes-Benz was proud to participate in 2008’s Goodwood Festival of Speed at Goodwood Park in West Sussex, held on 11 – 13 July.
One of the most prestigious dates in the classic car calendar, the event celebrates automotive design and performance - from the first ever cars to concept vehicles for the future. Centred around a hillclimb race in Goodwood Park, it attracts public and industry visitors alike. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton confirmed attendance for 2008's event.
Two historical racing cars from the Mercedes-Benz stable participated in the festival, performing on the track outside Goodwood House. These Grand Prix models from 1906 and 1908 were transported from Stuttgart to take part. The 1906 Mercedes was one of the last designs of Wilhelm Maybach, while the 1908 Benz racing car is of the type that won the Dieppe Grand Prix in France, exactly one hundred years ago.
In addition, six Mercedes-Benz supercharged sports cars from the 1930s and 1940s were displayed as part of the Cartier “Style et Luxe” exhibition. Forerunning the modern prestige of Mercedes-Benz, these elite vehicles were the ultimate status symbol of their day, winning iconic acclaim with their howling engines and striking shape.
2008 marked the 16th annual festival at Goodwood, and proved to be a fantastic day out for motoring enthusiasts of all ages, with air displays and live music in addition to the racing action.
