 | The owner of Northampton-based overnight pallet distribution specialist Lombard Express freely admits the latest addition to his fleet is “a bit over the top”. Andrew Dawkins’ new truck is a BlueTec® Euro 4 Actros 2560 Executive, with 600hp V8 engine, flat-floored MegaSpace cab, and Mercedes Powershift 16-speed automated gearbox. The Actros was supplied by Wellingborough dealer Intercounty Truck and Van and has lined up alongside six Mercedes rigids ranging in size from 7.5 to 18 tonnes gvw – including a Euro 4 18-tonne Axor 1824 – and three other tractor units. A loyal operator of Mercedes vehicles since it was founded 15 years ago, Lombard Express is a member of the TPN pallet network. It collects and delivers loads across Northamptonshire with its fleet of rigids, and uses the Actros to trunk to and from the network’s distribution hub in Rugby. Hauling a 5.1 metre-high step-framed, twin-deck, Don Bur curtainsider, the new tractor can carry up to 85 pallets in a single journey. “The Actros is more truck than we really need, but the huge power of the big V8 does bring some advantages,” Mr Dawkins continues. “As you’d expect, it’s completely on top of the job. Before it arrived we borrowed a 430hp unit and while that was a good truck it did have to work hard against the drag of our big trailer. The new Actros, on the other hand, takes the job in its stride and never needs to break sweat. “It only makes three trips per day and the distance is not great so fuel isn't a major issue for us. It’s more important that the truck makes the trip on time, every time. “And, as you might expect,” adds Mr Dawkins, “the driver is delighted with it. He had a 580hp Actros before but says this one is even better, while the new auto ’box makes it the most relaxing drive he’s ever had!” |
