BEAR orders Euro 4 Atego fleet

Atego 816 BEAR Scotland
Highways maintenance specialist BEAR Scotland has marked its success in winning a high-profile new contract by ordering an £800,000 fleet of Mercedes-Benz Atego 7.5-tonners.

The 27 trucks are its first to be supplied by Western Commercial, although BEAR Scotland has operated Atego acquired from another Mercedes-Benz dealer in the past. All are 816 models with day cabs, steel Thompson tipping bodies and BlueTec® Euro 4 SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) engines.

The order coincides with BEAR’s appointment to maintain trunk roads in the south-east of Scotland – a network which includes much of the M8, the prime artery between Edinburgh and Glasgow. This extends BEAR’s responsibility across the entire east of Scotland, as it also retained the contract to manage and maintain the trunk roads in the north-east of the country.

Perth-based BEAR Scotland was formed in 2000 by the alliance of three of the UK’s most successful road infrastructure design and maintenance organisations, namely Jacobs Babtie, Ennstone plc and Ringway Group – BEAR is an acronym of Babtie, Ennstone And Ringway.

The company’s 100-strong, mixed-marque fleet includes specialist traffic management vehicles and salt spreaders, as well as tippers. Roughly 35 per cent of these trucks wear the three-pointed star.

Its latest batch of Mercedes are being assigned to general trunk road maintenance duties. They replace other Atego that are being stood down, having reached the end of their lease contracts.

BEAR Scotland Managing Director Bill Taylor says: “The Mercedes Atego is a tried and tested product for us. It’s always proved very reliable and popular with our crews, and represents excellent value for money.”

And Fleet Manager Brian Tumbler adds: “We considered 7.5-tonne products from several different manufacturers. However, as we have been running Atego 815s for the last five or six years we saw no economic reason to change.”
