| When Emil Jellinek won the Nice Racing Week in 1899 in a Daimler, racing under the pseudonym ‘Monsieur Mercedes’, he could not have possibly imagined how he would immortalise his nine-year-old daughter’s name.
By 1901, there was the first automobile bearing the name Mercedes, the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft registered the name in 1902, and by 1903, Jellinek referred to himself as Jellinek-Mercedes. As he said, “probably the first time that a father has taken his daughter’s name”. In case you were wondering, in Spanish the name Mercedes means ‘grace’ – a beautiful name and a beautiful story.
Mercedes grew up to see her name become the most famous automobile brand in the world. |
