| Enhancing safety and cost efficiency simultaneously: the Turbobrake. This brake, which is available as an option on Axor models from 260 kW (354 hp) upwards, basically works in exactly the same way as the exhaust-gas turbocharger, but in reverse. The engine braking effect is boosted by raising the charge pressure and the turbocharger's speed. The engine braking effect benefits enormously as a result, with braking power increasing to as much as 300 kW.
This allows descents to be completed at a relatively high speed without any risk of the truck running out of control.
Wear-free braking is not the only economic gain to be had with the Turbobrake, however – it also tips the scales at around 85 kg less than a conventional optional retarder. |
