New gang mower

from Mercedes-Benz Unimog and Schmidt Mulag

The two rear mowing heads, each 2.2 metres working width, are driven directly from the Unimog U500’s diesel engine via a rear Power Take Off (NO5 hydraulic driver with two variable displacement pumps) supported by Mulag’s own power source, to provide a maximum of 138Kw. The 2.4 metre front-mounted mowing head is driven directly from the Unimog’s front PTO. The total mowing width is 6.5 metres.

Both rear mowing heads are deployed and stored hydraulically on the Unimog’s chassis with no overhang, so the Unimog’s fast on-road speeds can be maintained as it travels to the working site, and good manoeuverability is maintained, allowing the unit to pass through, for example, farm gates. The complete package is built on a demountable platform, so that when the grass is not growing the Unimog can be used for a wide range of other tasks.

The two rear mowing heads can be used together or individually, with simple hydraulic control direct from the driver/operator in the cab. This allows mowing to the left or right, with lateral hydraulic ‘shift’ for greater accuracy.

Traditionally the grass cutting season was March through to the autumn, but climate change means that grass needs to be cut throughout the winter, well into the spring and possibly all year. An additional problem is that spring and early summer now bring heavy downpours to soak the ground and make travel – especially on conventional tractor tyres – damaging and potentially expensive. The new Unimog/Schmidt Mulag gang mower can have automatically controlled tyre pressures all round, spreading the load on the land by doubling the tyre’s footprint.
