Sprinter’s in the frame again

for Bon Accord Glass

Seven years after it last bought vans bearing the famous three-pointed star of Mercedes-Benz, Aberdeen-based Bon Accord Glass has returned to city dealer John R. Weir Truck and Van with orders for seven new ones.

Image-conscious Bon Accord Glass specialises in the supply and installation of a wide range of high-quality windows, doors, conservatories and roofline systems for domestic customers.

Founded 33 years ago by Chairman Bryan Keith, the company has headquarters in Riverside Drive and a showroom at the Dobbies Garden Centre in Hazlehead.

Its latest order for Mercedes Sprinters represents a significant coup for John R. Weir, as Bon Accord Glass’s strikingly-liveried blue and white vans have a high profile in and around Aberdeen.

The company operates a fleet of 28 car-derived and panel vans, and chassis cabs with dropside bodies, the majority of which wear the badge of a rival German marque.

Managing Director Martin Keith, the son of Bryan, explains: “We tried a Sprinter demonstration unit supplied by John R. Weir and were very impressed with its smooth, powerful engine, and comfortable, well-appointed cab.

“Safety has always been a Mercedes-Benz attribute and as an employer we are very conscious of our Duty of Care obligations to staff. The new-generation Sprinter is widely recognised as the safest van on the road.

“We also look for the right deal, of course, and John R Weir were able to supply our new vans at a competitive price and within a reasonable timeframe, whereas other manufacturers were quoting very long lead times.”

Mr Keith continues: “We are not a transport company, our business is home improvements. So we need a reliable, hassle-free van, and the support of a high quality local dealer who can provide the service we need. I’m confident that in John R Weir we have a partner who will help us to drive our business forward.”

Bon Accord Glass has fitted its new Sprinters with internal racking and shelves, to carry tools and materials, while sheets of glass are transported on external frails.

Two of the vans are 3.0-tonne 209CDI Short models with standard roof heights. These are used by the company’s maintenance technicians – Bon Accord Glass offers a 10-year warranty on all of its products.

Three are high-roofed Medium-length 3.5-tonne 311CDIs and allocated to joiners who install windows and doors. And the remaining couple of 5.0-tonne 511CDI models with high roofs and Long bodies are used by joiners erecting conservatories and extensions.

Like all new Mercedes Sprinters, Bon Accord Glass’s new vans came with a Mercedes-Benz Service Package. Under this, all labour costs, materials and lubricants required in routine servicing at John R. Weir’s workshop will be covered for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever is reached first.

Launched last year, the new-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter combines dynamic good looks, ‘bullet-proof’ build quality, comprehensive specification and ingenious technology. The range cost £1.25 billion (1.8 billion euro) and took a team of 400 design engineers five years to develop. The result is a triumph, a vehicle that sets new standards in terms of productivity, refinement and safety.

Highlights include best-in-class side-loading door widths, outstanding ergonomics and comfort, a powerful and clean CDI diesel engine line-up topped by a storming 184hp 3.0-litre V6, and an advanced new version of the remarkable ESP® anti-skid system called Adaptive ESP®.
