 | A company with the largest retail depot in Ireland is getting to grips with its booming business, thanks to help from Mercedes-Benz.
Magowan Tyres has taken delivery of four Sprinter 311CDI vans, with Medium-length bodies and high roofs, from Newtownabbey dealer Mercedes-Benz Truck and Van (NI), from which it also bought four Long-bodied 311CDIs earlier in the year.
Magowan Tyres, which now runs a fleet of nine Sprinters and four 18-tonne Mercedes Axor trucks – including a new 1824 model with Euro 4 engine – invested £5.5 million at its main site at Newtownabbey three years ago. It now employs 70 people and has trebled annual turnover to more than £20 million.
Magowan Tyres was founded 42 years ago by Darryl Magowan Snr, whose son has followed him into the business. It specialises in the replacement and wholesale distribution of tyres throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic, from its 25,000sq ft warehouse at Newtownabbey and its other site at Carrickfergus.
“Our drivers prefer Mercedes to any other type of vehicle because they are so much more comfortable,” says Mr McGowan Snr. “And we appreciate them because of their reliability and ability to cover high mileages.
“We also enjoy an excellent relationship with the dealer,” he continues. “It has invested heavily in a huge new workshop and services our vehicles out of hours, which is a big plus for us, as it minimises downtime.”
Magowan Tyres uses its Medium-length Sprinters for on-site tyre replacement at customers’ premises or when attending vehicles that need tyres replacing at the side of the road. The Long-bodied models are used to distribute tyres to retailers in the North, while its Axor trucks, which have sleeper cabs, deliver as far afield as Cork and the West of Ireland.
Like all new Sprinters, Magowan Tyres’ new vans came with a Mercedes-Benz Service Package. Under this, all labour costs, materials and lubricants required in routine servicing will be covered for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever is reached first.
Launched last year, the new-generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter combines dynamic good looks, ‘bullet-proof’ build quality, comprehensive specification and ingenious technology. The range cost £1.25 billion (1.8 billion euro) and took a team of 400 design engineers five years to develop. The result is a triumph, a vehicle that sets new standards in terms of productivity, refinement and safety.
Highlights include best-in-class side-loading door widths, outstanding ergonomics and comfort, a powerful and clean CDI diesel engine line-up topped by a storming 184hp 3.0-litre V6, and an advanced new version of the remarkable ESP® anti-skid system called Adaptive ESP®. |
