| On 7 May 1998 the merger of the century became a reality. Daimler-Benz AG and the US Chrysler Corporation put pen to paper on the link-up of the two companies. The amalgamation of these two historical pillars of the automotive industry was the largest merger in business history. The result, measured by revenues, was the world's third-largest car maker. Combined vehicle production ran at over 4.4 million units and, as at the end of 1998, the newly created Group employed 441,502 employees. |
