 | As a former Motorcycle Grand Prix rider and three-times Isle of Man TT Champion, Rob McElnea knows all about high performance vehicles – so when it comes to vans he puts the Mercedes Sprinter in pole position.
Now retired from competitive riding, Rob is contracted by Yamaha to run its Team Virgin Mobile Samsung campaign in the British Superbike Championship.
The Scunthorpe-based team runs three tractor units with custom built semi-trailers for transporting bikes and kit to races, but for specialist testing, emergency spare parts collection and ‘panic’ deliveries, its Sprinter 311CDI is a winner every time.
The Sprinter is loaned to the team on a sponsorship deal from Lincolnshire and Yorkshire Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer H & L Garages.
“It’s the ideal size for transporting a single bike, and can swallow a huge volume of spare parts, tools and testing equipment. It’s also supremely comfortable and, being a Mercedes, is sure to give us the reliability we need,” says Mr McElnea.
Mercedes vans are also first choice for Mr McElnea both as his personal transport and as the backbone of the delivery fleet for his ANC parcel delivery business. His ‘company car’ is a 150bhp Vito 115CDI Traveliner, which blends smooth, stylish looks and seating for five people with enough load-carrying space to accommodate a couple of motocross bikes. And the ANC franchise for North Lincolnshire, which he has operated since 1995, runs a fleet of seven Sprinter 311CDI vans.
