Life’s a gas with Mercedes

Plumber and heating engineer Chris McNiece spends a lot of time in his van, so he wants it to be as comfortable as possible – that’s why he insists on Mercedes-Benz.

Mr McNiece, who trades as 1st Gas Call, has just taken delivery of his third Mercedes, a Sprinter 218CDI, from Preston dealer Ciceley Commercials.

The van is powered by a smooth and powerful V6 turbo-diesel engine, driving through an automatic gearbox, and is equipped with optional extras including alloy wheels, cruise control, air-conditioning and heated mirrors, windscreen and seats.

“I’m in the van all day, as it’s my office as well as my transport. So practicality isn’t enough; I also need comfort,” he says. “Running a smart, professional-looking vehicle also sends out a positive message about the quality of the service that I offer.”

Mr McNiece was among the first customers in the north-west to take delivery of the new-generation Mercedes Sprinter. Launched this summer, the new model combines stylish good looks with ‘bullet-proof’ build quality, a comprehensive specification and ingenious technology. It took a team of 400 design engineers five years to develop at a cost of £1.25 billion (1.8 billion euro) and sets new standards in terms of productivity, refinement and safety.

He says: “It draws a huge amount of attention – other van drivers have stopped me in the street or wound down their windows in traffic queues to get a better look. First impressions count for a lot in business and turning up on a job in a smart vehicle, looking presentable and professional, helps build a sense of confidence in the customer.

The Sprinter has a high roof, providing room to stand up in the load area, and is also fitted with a Sortimo ‘racking’ system of shelves and boxes. Mr McNiece has more than 25 years’ experience in the trade and has been self-employed for the last eight years. He offers plumbing and heating services, including gas appliance breakdown and maintenance cover, across the Preston area.

“My previous two Mercedes vans were also supplied by Ciceley Commercials and both the dealer and the vehicles have given me excellent service down the years,” he adds.
