 | People with autism are enjoying safe transportation and a range of recreational activities thanks to a new fleet of Mercedes-Benz minibuses. Thorne House Services for Autism (THSA), a UK charity supporting people with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, has taken delivery of five new Mercedes Vito Traveliners from Sheffield dealership Northside Truck and Van. The nine-seater Vito 111CDIs have joined three identical vehicles delivered earlier in 2006. THSA provides residential care, supported living, adult learning and employment training for people on the autistic spectrum. Service users are offered an array of stimulating activities including computer studies, art, pottery, horse riding and music therapy. Philip Bartey, THSA Chief Executive, says: “Transport to most of these activities is vital, as many of our service users are collected from and returned to their own homes. “We need large, comfortable vehicles capable of accommodating both service users and support staff in a safe and secure environment. They must also be reliable with low maintenance costs.” He continues: “After considering a number of different vehicles we decided the Vito Traveliner was the best mach for our needs as well as being competitively priced to fit within our transportation budget.” THSA was founded in 1986 and originally supported six young people with autism in Thorne, near Doncaster. Since then it has expanded to work with more than 25 local authorities and lends direct support to over 200 children and adults with autism. The charity operates innovative projects in the UK and is currently developing its service into new areas of provision.
