 | One of the world’s leading crane manufacturers has been given a lift by a new fleet of Mercedes-Benz vans. Terex Atlas has bought 13 new-generation Sprinters from Govan dealer Western Commercial, for use as service vehicles at sites across the UK. The company has 34 engineers in the field, providing maintenance and breakdown support to more than 2,500 lorry loader cranes nationwide. Eleven of the Sprinter 311CDI Short vans are high-roof versions while the other two have standard roofs. Ten replace older vans that have been stood down, but three represent additions to the service fleet. Terex Atlas provides specialist service back-up for its diverse customer base from regional hubs in Blantyre and Bradford. Regardless of the size or location of their fleet, all Terex Atlas customers are guaranteed the same accurate and efficient level of response. Andrew Taylor, National Service Manager for Terex Atlas, says the new Sprinters are crucial to the company’s policy of delivering ‘a local service – nationwide’. “The success of our brand is underpinned by the high-quality service back-up we provide for our customers,” he explains. “Mercedes vans help us deliver this service. We have operated Sprinters for over seven years and they have proved extremely reliable, with very few breakdowns. “The reliability of the vehicle I critical in helping us achieve a successful service operation. Making the best possible use of our engineers’ time is vital.” Each van is fitted with a generator for 110-volt electrical equipment, a Bott racking system, tracking devices and satellite navigation, to speed-up response times. Mr Taylor continues: “Our engineers are invariably the first to point out any problems, and they really like the performance and drivability of their new vans. “With around a third of their time spent travelling to sites it is important that we take their well-being into account, which is why we have had all of the vans fitted with optional ‘comfort’ seats.” Terex Atlas is a division of Terex, which was founded 50 years ago and is based in Motherwell. The parent company markets more than 50 brands around the world, providing equipment for the construction, quarrying, recycling, surface mining, shipping, transportation, refining, utility and maintenance industries. The new-generation Mercedes Sprinter was launched last summer. Combining dynamic good looks, ‘bullet-proof’ build quality, comprehensive specification and ingenious technology, the range cost £1.25 billion (1.8 billion euro) and took a team of 400 design engineers five years to develop. The result is a triumph, a vehicle that sets new standards in terms of productivity, refinement and safety. Highlights of the range include best-in-class side-loading door widths, outstanding ergonomics and comfort, a powerful and clean CDI diesel engine line-up topped by a storming 184hp 3.0-litre V6, and an advanced new version of the remarkable ESP® anti-skid system called Adaptive ESP®. |
